Chapter 5, written by Steven Willmott, Ulises Cortés and David Cabanillas, addresses the context for the development of agent systems through the use of standards. It describes the work that has been in the IT community to support interoperability, primarily through the efforts of FIPA, but also other standards organisations. Arguably, the development of such standards must occur before the widespread adotion of agent technologies.
