M-theory Branes for City Folk

Regular Seminar Neil Lambert (King's)

at:
15:00 City U.
room B103
abstract:

I will discuss some novel algebraic structures and how they lead to the quantum field theories that arise on the world volumes of 2-branes and 5-branes in M-theory.

Duality Groups, Automorphic Forms and Higher Derivative Corrections

Regular Seminar Neil Lambert (King's College)

at:
13:30 IC
room Huxley 503
abstract:

We discuss how the duality group G controls the higher derivative corrections that arise in the effective action of M-theory compactified on a torus. In particular we show that the perturbative contributions always involve the weights of G and that this is a consequence of the appearance of automorphic forms of G in the complete quantum effective action.
